champion tree hunting

Who knew it could be a hobby?

The Colorado Tree Coalition keeps a register of the champion trees in Colorado and American Forests keeps the national registry. [ American forests link… https://www.americanforests.org/get-involved/americas-biggest-trees/champion-trees-national-register/ ] To date, we have found a State and National Champion Blue Spruce in Sawpit, Colorado,[there is a pic of me climbing it] and an entire grove of contending Engelmann Spruce in the Uncompahgre Wilderness. We (with my friends at Arborist Services out of Telluride) have also found a national champion narrow leaf cottonwood in Lake City. This year we discovered another narrow leaf cottonwood near Ridgway, CO that we nominated. This cottonwood just off HWY 550 will become the new national champion tree.

Undoubtedly there are other champion trees around Montrose, Ridgway, and Ouray. Do you think you have a contender? Give us a call and we’ll help you measure it. For more information on champion tree hunting in Colorado click here.
